Farmer as a profession has existed in human life from the early beginnings of human civilization in all regions of the world.
A farmer is basically a person whose profession and source of income is to grow food crops. There are many variations across geographies and periods of time, in the process of farming, also called agriculture. But the core element of farming remains the same, and is by and large considered a vital profession for every social structure. Because food is a basic need for all human beings, and farmers are the food-growers of our civilization.
In some civilizations, like the ancient Indian, Chinese and Egyptian civilization, farmer was also considered a form of god and worshiped for the same reason.
The work of a farmer involves the following steps:
Tilling the soil
If the land is undergoing regular cycles of farming, then the land sometimes becomes over utilized in terms of the oxygen and minerals that the plants need to derive from it. So the farmer needs to till the land that is the soil needs to be up-turned and exposed to the air so that it can get re-oxygenated. The soil also needs to be fertilized so that the minerals and supportive elements for plant growth are replenished in the soil.
Depending on the crop to be grown, the farmer chose and sows particular seeds in the soil. The farmer knows it is important to pay attention to the seasonal timing and weather while sowing. Because each season has a different temperature, humidity and climatic conditions. And over centuries of farming there is enough evidence to support which season is best for the germination and growth of seeds to saplings.
Irrigation and growth of the crop
Either the farmer resorts to natural irrigation due to rains, if the season is suitable or he makes separate arrangements to provide a stable external water supply to the plants as they grow into strong and healthy crops. These crops then bear the fruit of the grains, fruits, vegetables, etc. that is grown by the farmer. These crops are then taken off the plants, cleaned and sold in the market by the farmer.
The profession of a farmer is one of the most vital for human existence.

A farmer (agriculturalist) is a person that cultivate Land and rear animals for future use. In advanced country, a farmer is mostly a farm owner but sometimes; a farmer might work as a laborer on someone else farm.
The activity sectors of a farmer is agriculture. Farmer is the one responsible for the production of food crops and rearing of edible and high nutritional meats and poultry products for the masses.
History of Farming
Farming has been in existence since the Neolithic period, and it is the first occupation known to man. Animal husbandry comes after that.
Types of Farmers
A dairy farmer is a person who owns a dairy farm that has cows and other animals that produce milk for sale. The milk and consequentially the milk products are the items that are sold by the dairy farmer.
An agricultural farmer tills the land, sows seeds and grows and tends to crop on land to reap the harvest during the appropriate season. This is the most common notion of a farmer.
Types of farming
This is a small scale farm own by a farmer. Resources limit this type of farmer; this makes its production capacity to below. The characteristics of a subsistence farmer include using crude implements like a hoe, Cutlass, sickle, etc., low production and small labor or family labor.
This is a large scale production of farm product. This type of farmer is limited by resources; there is always a room for expansion because of its large capital. Characteristics of commercial farmer include high mechanization, large-scale production and lots of skilled laborers.

A farmer is one of the most common and yet important people in the rural set-up supporting all other professions and life above it. He provides farm products to curb food insecurity.

Indian farmers consist of a large percentage of the total rural population of India. Farming in India consists mainly of fruits, dry fruits, vegetables, coffee, and cotton.
Farming in India began by 9000 BCE as they cultivated plants and domesticated crops and animals. Soon after, as life began to settle, new agricultural methods were invented. In the middle Ages, Indian farmers got even more sophisticated with their techniques, and Indian crops had an effect on the economies of other parts of the world.
Importance of farming to India
Farming or agriculture is vital to the economy in India. India is among the top two farm producers in the world, with agriculture in India employing over 60% of its population. This is due to a large percent of the population living in rural areas.
Types of Indian farmers
- Subsistent farmers only grow what they need for their own survival.
- Mixed farmers grow cattle and food on the same area of land.
- Plantation farmers plant trees or bushes, such as banana, tea, or coffee on massive estates.
- Extensive farming is done with the help of machines, with a limited amount of
- Intensive farmers use a large amount of labour on a small area of land. This is done with the help of manual labour.
- Shifting farmers use a system of farming where they cultivate a plot of land for a few years before completely deserting it. The yield decreases after a couple of years, so they abandon the plot and cultivate on a fresh one.
Farmers in India provide are a massive part of the population and they provide food for India as well as exported to other countries. There are many different types of Indian farmers, and major crops include coffee, tea, fruits and vegetables, rice, wheat, sugarcane and cotton. India is one of the world’s major producer of fresh fruits, and the second largest producer of wheat and rice. Clearly, Indian farmers are a major part of Indian society, as nearly 70 percent of Indians live in rural areas.
